The French Language

French, which is a member of the Romance language group of languages, can, along with Italian, Portuguese and Spanish, trace its roots back to spoken Latin, which dates back to the time of the Roman Empire.

It is one of the official languages in Switzerland and Belgium; the first language in the Principality of Monaco and in the Canadian provinces of Ontario, Quebec and the Acadia region of New Brunswick.

French is also widely spoken in parts of several US states, such as Maine, New Hampshire and Louisiana. In Africa, French is most commonly spoken in Gabon, with 80% fluency; Mauritius, 78%; Algeria, 75%; Senegal and Côte d’Ivoire, both of which report 70% fluency.

As a result of the widespread French and Belgian colonisation that took place between the 17th and 20th centuries the language was also introduced to several other parts of the world as diverse as Polynesia, Southeast Asia and the Caribbean.

French is one of the official languages used by all United Nations agencies and an impressive number of international organisations. As a result, there are numerous jobs available for French speaking translators and interpreters in many parts of the world.

In 2013, the country’s Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs reported that French was second only to German in terms of the number of people speaking the language in Europe.

Today, it is estimated that, globally, there are approximately 110 million native French speakers. However, a recent demographic projection estimated that there will be approximately 500 million French speakers in the world by 2025 and 650 million, approximately 7% of the global population, by 2050. It is also suggested that the total number of French speakers could reach one billion by 2060.
