The Malayalam Language

Predominantly spoken in the Indian state of Kerala, where it carries official language status, Malayalam is one of the 22 scheduled languages used in the sub-continent and in 2013 the government of India declared it a classical language. Malayalam, which is also the official language of Lakshadweep and Puducherry, belongs to the Dravidian family of languages and, according to a census carried out in 2001, is spoken by approximately 33 million people.

As it is derived from both Tamil and Sanskrit it is perhaps to be expected that the Malayalam alphabet contains the largest number of letters of any of the Indian languages. In fact it has letters that represent not only all the sounds of Sanskrit, but also all the Dravidian languages.
