The Uzbek Language

Uzbek, which has between 25 and 26 million native speakers, belongs to the Eastern Turkic or Karluk branch of the Turkic language family and is the official language of Uzbekistan. In addition to being spoken in Uzbekistan, it is also used by Uzbeks living across Central Asia. Over many centuries it has been influenced by several other languages, most notably Persian and Arabic and in more recent times, Russian. Islam has exerted the strongest influence on the Uzbek language, so it is to be expected that Arabic words feature prominently. For many years Uzbekistan came under tsarist, followed by Soviet rule, which means traces of Russian have inevitably found their way into the contemporary Uzbek vocabulary.
