The Hindi Language
Modern Standard Hindi or Hindi, is a standardised and Sanskritised register form of the Hindustani language. Hindi is the official language of several Indian states.
Standard Hindi is based on the khadiboli regional dialect, which is spoken in and around Delhi, western Uttar Pradesh and southern Uttarakhand.
It came to prominence during the 17th century, at the time of the Mughal Empire, when it became known as Urdu, ‘the language of the court.’ By the 19th century Hindi became standardised as a separate language from Urdu, thanks to the Hindutva movement.
In 1881 the state of Bihar became the first in India replace Urdu with Hindi as its sole official language.
